Beachmere

We camped in someones 40 acre backyard at Beachmere.  You get allocated an area, not a site so there's plenty of room.  There are lakes and a large variety of birdlife, including sea eagles, herons, red backed robins, etc, etc.

This was a nice quiet spot with only a few campers and a small squadron of sand flies.

Lochaber Farm Stay

We stopped Lochaber Farm to get away from the crowds.  We were the only people there so we achieved that.

The property also has some aboriginal art, much of which has been vandalised in the last 60 or 70 years.

Springsure

Springsure was going to be an overnight stop but it proved fairly interesting so we allowed for another day there.  

We visited the famous Mr Will's grave.  It was another Wills (not the one you or we first of) and proved to be a sad story of a massacre in 1861.

Next day we visited Fort Rainworth featuring a fort built in 1862 (or was it just a stone store house)?

Salvatore Rosa National Park

We found ourselves on a back road to Salvatore Rosa National Park that the local information centre said was “a bit bumpy in parts”.  It turned into a narrow rough track but with care we found it wasn’t too bad.  

A drawer under one of the seats came open as we lurched around a bend and Maree’s hat slid off the seat into the drawer.  The drawer closed on the next bend.  It took us hours to find the hat.

During our stay in this remote park we pretty much had the place to ourselves.  After all that we think the scenery on drive in is more interesting than that in the park.

This post is out of sequence because I had to spend some time recovering the photos from a corrupted SD card.

About a week or so ago we once again we found that some of the best camps are the free ones.  Just out of Camooweal on the Georgina River was up there with the better ones and is very popular with caravans lining several kilometres of the riverside.  Regardless of the crowds, we found a great spot to camp, relax and watch the passing bird life.

The whistling kites proved entertaining as they swooped down to grab fish from the river.

This is another great camp spot in the shady grove beside Lawn Hill Creek.  Great swimming and a couple of nice walks.

On our first night here we celebrated Big Willie’s birthday.  He got lots of toys that kept him occupied for hours.

This national park was our big day out while staying at Adels Grove.  We walked and walked and paddled and paddled.  

The girls didn’t paddle; they took the cruise up the gorge and saw two good looking guys paddling their canoe.
